The “Training course on Biogas Technology for Countries along the Mekong River” was sponsored by Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) China Secretariat, Department of International Cooperation and organized by Biogas Institution of Ministry of Agriculture(BIOMA).The opening ceremony was held in Chengdu, China on March 21.

The training course lasts for 14 days and has 21 participants from Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Thailand. It is one of the first projects supported financially by Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Special Fund. In the meantime, it is the first time for BIOMA to hold a training program supported by the Fund.

On the First LMC Leaders’ Meeting in Sanya in March 2016, officials made an announcement to support the development and utilization of renewable energy, strengthen cooperation, information exchange, sustainable and effective development and utilization of clean energy. They also decided to promote the scientific and technological cooperation and experience sharing, deepen human resources development, education policies, vocational training cooperation and communications between education departments and universities. The training course is a positive response to China’s National Foreign Policy of “Belt and Road Initiative”.

The climate of these five countries along the Mekong River is suitable for anaerobic fermentation. Agricultural waste in these countries also makes good raw materials for biogas fermentation, which facilitates the promotion of biogas technology. China, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam are entirely aware of the significance of renewable energies such as biogas on the climate.
